Franz Kafka was born in Prague in 1883. He suffered all his life from severe feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt, the result of an unhappy childhood with his domineering father. Despite taking a degree in law, Kafka saw himself fated to become a writer. Ordinary events that turn, inexplicably, into walking nightmares-these are the "Kafkaesque" experiences so originally and unforgettably brought to life in the Castle. A stubborn, if unimaginative, land surveyor only referred to as "K" believes he has been hired by a nobleman ("Count Westwest") of a remote district. Yet the surveyor is stymied in all his attempts to meet or speak to his employer, find his dwelling, or learn what the job is supposed to be. The local townspeople show concern, byt they are strangly, ominously secretive. Though there are hardly any signs of the count's even being alive, his influence seems to enthrall the entire village. The Castle may impress us as a satirizing our bureaucratic society.
